Bill and Karen are just regular people trying to survive a wicked recession that takes all of their previous lives. Being left a house on Mateguas Island by his aunt Bill is relieved, but Karen craves the city life. Their twins seem to settle in better, for the adults bring their own unwanted luggage. At first, all seems almost normal. Just one or two things appear slightly out of kilter and this could just be a result of island life. Gradually the curse left by an old Indian woman plays out with devastating consequences to the relationship and the little family as a whole.
The characterization was stunning. While neither Bill, nor Karen is a perfect person, they are both very real, warts and all. As the action and threat escalate each of them grows in their own way to meet the ultimate challenge. This is not a book to read late at night if a person wishes to sleep. It is highly charged and full of mystery. It is impossible not to keep turning the pages.

Creepy, edge of the seat thriller with twists I couldn’t foresee. Omg. I had to sit and wait a moment before I wrote this review because the novel keyed me up so good. I love horror. I’ve read and watched it for over twenty years, ever since I was a small child. This story caught my attention and I was fortunate enough to win it during a giveaway. I was especially pleased to discover Native American lore in the pages, a set of mythology that I do not often find in literature.
This is old-fashioned horror, not the sort of detail-oriented gore fest which exists in other books of the genre. I was thrilled with the subtlety involved and that the author took her time introducing us to the horror. Best of all, I loved the unique feel of the story taking place on an island!

I received it in exchange for my unbiased review, and loved it down to the very last page.
