Blogging about Kara

IMG_0830This sweet little girl is Kara and she is currently a “guest” at the Coastal Humane Society in Brunswick, ME.  Unfortunately, she has been a guest there for far too long and I’m writing this today in the hope that it will help her find her furr-ever home.

Kara is a 2-year-old pittie mix pup.  She’s a petite little girl who doesn’t photograph particularly well – her head always seems to look larger than it really is!  She’s already had puppies even though she was way too young to be bred and now has been abandoned.   She’s lucky she’s at the Brunswick shelter – another might have put her down by now to make room for someone else.

I volunteer at the shelter once a week.  I don’t get there as often as I’d like to, but it’s just too hard given the fact that I live on an island and have to take a ferry then drive 20 miles.   In any case, I always make it a point to give Kara a good long walk when I’m there.  I was in yesterday and Kara was, by far, the easiest dog I took out.  She has excellent leash manners – walks with a loose lead – no pulling.  And she will always sit for a treat and, if you ask nicely, will shake paw with you.  Oh, and she’s ambidextrous, too – she can shake with either the left  or right front paw.  She also will love it if you scratch her ears and her chest and, more likely than not,  will reward you with gentle, sweet kisses all over your face.

She’s a playful little girl, too.  She loves to pick up a stick and carry it while she walks although sometimes she tries to pick up one that is more like a log.  But you just have to tell her “Not that one, Kara.  It’s too big,” then offer her a treat.   She’ll drop the log,  do an excellent “sit” for you, then take the treat with a very soft mouth.

I know a lot of people are put off by pittie pups – they think they’re all dangerous or untrustworthy.  But did you know that pit bulls were originally bred as family dogs and are known to be excellent with children?  Think about Michael Vick’s fighting dogs – many of them are now therapy dogs as well as being loyal family companions.  My nephew and his wife, who are expecting their first child soon, have a gorgeous little pittie girl who is the light of their life.

So, I’m on my soapbox here hoping we can “share” Kara into a loving family.  Won’t you help find this little girl a home?
